Should kids be given homework?

Meanwhile, as kids go back to their educational institutions, there is a formal discussion about how the kids should utilize their free time after school. Guardians all over the nation who have a complaint about a lot of work given to their kids are giving praise to a teacher of second-grade about the policy of no homework. Parents and their kids spending their time together, playing outside is an excellent thing. Now, this is possible when teachers in schools do not assign homework to kids such that they can have free time with their families after classes.

Many parents around the country are anxious that their children are not gaining an academic advantage. But the question here is, how much homework should kids be assigned after they leave school? This question remains pending.

For ten years, the standard of homework has customarily been that it is a kind of assignment that should last a maximum of ten minutes. Another example is that homework for second-grade kids should take about twenty minutes every night, then for students who are in high school should take about two hours to complete their homework assignments every night. Associations that are concerned with education agree with this guideline. Some schools have decided not to give homework to the students in the lowest grades but making the day in schools longer by a couple of hours to provide more time for in-class instructions. Other schools want to let their students go home when they are exhausted to play soccer and sleep early.

Harris Cooper, a professor in one of the universities, did research that was comprehensive on homework to this date. He found proof of a positive connection between student achievements and doing homework, this meant that the kids who did their homework in school also did better in their academics. For older students, in seventh all through the twelfth grade, had a positive connection that was stronger than the relationships of the kids in the lower grades.

The research that Cooper was carrying out was mainly about how homework affects academic excellence, such as scores of the tests. According to Cooper’s research report, it showed that the work assigned to students also improves attitudes, habits of studying, inquisitiveness, self-discipline, and the skills of solving problems by themselves. On the contrary, Cooper also, in his research, found out that homework sometimes causes emotional and physical fatigue, stir attitudes that are negative about learning, and limits time for leisure for children. As Cooper was concluding his research, he proposed to carry out further studies of such possible impacts of homework.

Not every expert in education concurs with the assessment of Cooper. There are those experts who support that homework is an assignment that should last ten minutes as the maximum amount of time. Then some agree that homework is not helpful for students who are in elementary school.

Other experts believe that they should emphasize the improvement of homework tasks’ quality and that they should do away with homework for the kids in lower classes.

Conclusion.

In his research, Cooper noted that some teachers give a lot of homework to students, and every guardian has a right to be concerned. It is because a parent may never know how homework may impact their kids’ lives.
